Guatemala City: A tragic bus accident in Guatemala has resulted in the deaths of at least 55 people, with many others injured. According to international news agencies, the incident occurred on Monday when a passenger bus crashed through a safety barrier and plunged into a 20-meter-deep ravine.
The bus was carrying approximately 75 passengers at the time of the accident. Among the deceased are 36 men and 15 women, while the injured have been rushed to various hospitals. Several of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.
According to the fire department, the driver lost control of the bus, which collided with several smaller vehicles before plunging into the ravine. This has been described as one of the worst traffic accidents in Guatemala in recent years.
Guatemalan President expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and declared a period of national mourning. Meanwhile, the Minister of Communications revealed that preliminary investigations indicate the bus was 30 years old but was still permitted to operate on the roads. Authorities are also investigating whether the vehicle was overloaded at the time of the accident.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an official investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.
